In 2009, a group of small business leaders formed Small Businesses for Healthcare Reform. The group worked on the development of state-based healthcare coverage legislation, called SustiNet, during the Connecticut General Assembly's 2009 Legislative Session. In 2010, the group changed its name to Small Business for a Healthy Connecticut to reflect its continuing commitment to healthcare advocacy that represents the interests of small business, as well as a healthy and economically competitive Connecticut.

Since 2011, we have been active in advocacy and education in Connecticut around the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare.) Our members have served on advisory committees for Access Health CT, the state's official health insurance marketplace, the Office of the Healthcare Advocate (OHA), the State Innovation Model (SIM), and have provided testimony and expert advice to the Connecticut General Assembly and various committees :

We are working to make healthcare coverage reflect the way you run your business so it works better for you.

How Our Work Helps You

Whether you're a business owner or an employee, your ability to get the medical attention you need is a common concern.

Because of the alarming and uncontrolled rise in the cost of healthcare, many business owners haven't been able to afford to purchase insurance for themselves or their workers. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) makes healthcare coverage available to 32 million people who currently don’t have health insurance.

Our work makes sure there is clear communication between those that are making decisions about how the Affordable Care Act will work - and the small and micro-businesses that will use it - and their employees.

We are a non-partisan corporate entity - on our way to becoming a not-for-profit. Our goal is to make sure that small businesses are represented accurately.

Because you spend most of your time building your business, you have less time available to advocate for better legislation that reflects the unique needs of small and micro-business.

We've spent our careers building and running all types of small businesses - hair salons, construction, real estate, technology, insurance, retail and other types of business. Then we taught ourselves the legislative process. We are here for you!
